Studies Suggest Progesterone Can Be Used to Treat Mental Health Issues

Recent studies suggest that hormone replacement therapy for women may be able to treat some mental illnesses such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

According to World Health.net, recent studies suggest that – hormones–specifically, progesterone—may offer some solutions not found in the standard or current treatments for certain mental illnesses suffered by women. The research indicates that schizophrenia and bipolar disorder symptoms, as defined by the DSM, can actually be traced back to progesterone deficiency.

According to researcher Doris King, who wrote the book Curing Bipolar Disorder and Schizophrenia, based on her own success with her treating her own bipolar disorder, King claims that she was able to turn around her diagnoses of both these disorders with hormone therapy.

She bases many of her arguments on writings by the late Dr. John Lee, which stress the importance of maintaining normal progesterone levels in women facing mental or emotional distress.

Dr. Lee recommended a course of hormone replacement therapy in doses of progesterone that reflect the amount of hormone the body should normally produce. However, King suggests that in women with a long history of progesterone deficiency, which is the case in patients with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, doses of hormone replacement should be “higher than the normal amount.” In her book, she writes, “When you have bipolar disorder or schizophrenia, your brain doesn’t have the progesterone it needs to function properly.” She introduces the idea of a loading dose, using progesterone in doses 3-4 times higher than Dr. Lee’s recommendation until the body’s deficit is restored. During King’s own recovery from bipolar disorder, she used high doses of progesterone for four months.

King’s success in treating her own disorder and other research and practice that back up her claims, such as that of Dr. Lee, suggest that hormone replacement therapy could treat certain mental illnesses. Beyond that, they indicate that medical science may have to rethink the root causes of some of these conditions and take a more serious look at the significant roles that hormone imbalances can play on mental and emotional health.

Hormone Replacement Is the Safest and Most Effective Treatment for Menopause

The use of hormone replacement therapy to treat severe mental illness in women is still controversial, but studies like this are promising. Medical research is always learning more and more about the truth and the benefits of hormone replacement (HRT) for women.

There has always been a lot of controversy about the use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Much of the myths and misconceptions about the safety of HRT for women have recently been debunked. Recent studies have shown, for example, that there is no link between hormone replacement therapy and an increased risk of cancer or heart disease.

Hormone replacement therapy is still the safest and most effective treatment currently available for not only the onset of headaches but the other debilitating symptoms of menopause such as hot flashes and night sweats. And the many benefits of hormone replacement therapy for women do not stop there. Many women on bioidentical hormone replacement have found that it can increase libido, lessen vaginal dryness, and otherwise improve their sex lives!
