Chemical Peels Q & A

What are chemical peels?

A chemical peel is a cosmetic treatment that uses a special solution to exfoliate the surface of your skin. As your skin regenerates itself, you’ll notice a smoother and younger-looking appearance. The team at Woodlands Wellness and Cosmetic Center uses chemical peels to treat many common skin concerns, including:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Acne
  • Sun spots and pigmentation
  • Acne scars
  • Rough-textured skin

To get the most dramatic effect, the team may suggest combining your chemical peel with other cosmetic treatments.

What are the types of chemical peels?

There are three primary types of peels, each with a different strength and goal. The types of peels include:

Light peel

The light peel is a superficial peel that uses a mild acidic solution to gently exfoliate the very outer layer of your skin. A light peel may be recommended as a treatment for skin discoloration and textural changes or to refresh your look.

Medium peel

The medium peel is able to penetrate both the inner and middle layers of your skin. You may be a good candidate for a medium peel if you want to erase the appearance of your sun spots and lines and wrinkles.

Deep peel

The deep peel uses a stronger acidic solution to erase the two layers of your skin like the medium peel and also the damaged skin cells.

The type of peel for you may depend on your ultimate beauty goals.

What can I expect during a chemical peel?

The team at Woodlands Wellness and Cosmetic Center performs your chemical peel at the office. During your chemical peel, your specialist applies the special solution to your skin with a cotton swab or brush and allows the peel to sit on your skin for a set period of time before applying a neutralizing solution or removing the peel.

The length of your chemical peel may depend on the type of peel you’re getting and may take 20-90 minutes. After your chemical peel, your skin may be red, sensitive, and/or swollen.

How long does it take to recover from a chemical peel?

Recovery from your chemical peel may depend on the type of peel applied to your skin. With a light peel, your recovery may take one to seven days, and it may take up to 14 days for a medium peel. Because of the nature of the deep chemical peel, it may take two or more weeks for your skin to heal and regenerate.
