What The Heck Should We Eat??
Our world is flooded with information about healthy eating. Everywhere you look, there are diets, meal plans, supplements, books and blogs claiming to have the magic formula for healthy eating. There are so many conflicting messages about ‘good foods’, ‘bad foods’, ‘low-fat’, ‘no-fat’ ‘healing foods’, ‘harming foods’ and so on!!! As we try to navigate between scientific research about health and the pressures of daily life we become anxious about our efforts to be healthy. If this is you, consider reading Food: What The Heck Should I Eat? By Dr. Mark Hyman.
In this book, Dr. Hyman bridges the gap between extreme food paranoia and poor eating habits. He provides a nice balance between science-based research and practical strategies for making good food choices. He takes specific food categories (meat, fish, dairy eggs, grains etc.) and provides useful insight into sourcing high quality products, healthy preparation methods and gives the reader practical consumption advice. Along with sourcing recommendations, Dr. Hyman provides valuable information regarding foods additives, pesticides and processing. I must applaud his section on cleaning out your pantry and fridge. By referencing his lists of foods to keep and foods to throw away, you can be that much closer to stocking up on healthy foods!
Finally, Dr. Hyman briefs the reader on the Pegan Diet. It is his version of balanced healthy eating somewhere between Paleo and Vegan. He supports that benefits of both eating styles but finds fault in both and arrives at a combination of both. He thoughtfully includes a number of recipes to help readers get started on a healthier eating track and keeps the information simple and easy to follow.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who just wants the answer to: “What The Heck Should I Eat”?
