Be Sun Safe this Summer!

No matter what you do, it is hard to avoid the sun’s ray in the summer time.  It is the ultraviolet A and B rays that damage our skin.  This leads to early wrinkles, skin cancer and other skin problems.  People come in all the time trying to find ways to look younger and the best way to do that is to stay out of the sun as much as possible!  If you do need to be in the sun, there are some steps that you can take to protect your skin as much as possible.

The Environmental Protection Agency has developed a program called “SunWise” which is aimed at children to protect them from overexposure.   Their message is one that we can all use as a great reminder of staying safe in the summer!

SunWise suggests four simple steps:

  • Slip on a shirt
  • Slop on SPF 15+ sunscreen generously
  • Slap on a hat
  • Wrap on sunglasses

The truth is that sunscreen alone will not prevent cancer.  It is important that we cover up as much as possible to avoid those harmful rays all together. There are a number of things we can do in conjunction with sunscreen to ensure safety:

1.    Wear sun-protective clothing – If you're going to be in the sun for any length of time, wear clothes made from tight-woven fabric so the sun's rays can't get through to your skin, and stay in the shade when you can. Grab some swim shirts for the kids since the shoulders burn so easily when they are building those sandcastles!   Wear long sleeves and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face, neck, shoulders and ears.  Remember that clouds and water won't protect you--60% to 80% of the sun's rays go through clouds and can reach swimmers at least one foot below the surface of the water. The sun's rays can also reflect off water, snow and white sand.

2.    Avoid being in the sun during peak hours of 10 AM and 2 PM when the sun is strongest.

3.    Wear sunglasses that block at least 99% of UVA sunlight.

4.    Don’t use tanning beds since they use ultraviolet rays.  Even though they are advertised as being “harmless” UVA rays, they can still cause sun damage because the rays penetrate deeper into the skin that UVB rays.

5.    Sunscreen is an important component to sun protection.  Be sure that you choose one that is water-resistant and has an SPF or 30 or higher.  Select products that have both UVA and UVB protection.  Check the expiration date to ensure effectiveness.  Apply 20 minutes before you go out and reapply every two hours, even on cloudy days, and after swimming or sweating.

By following these simple rules, you will protect yourself from premature aging and from skin cancer.  Be sun safe this summer!
